Job Description Job Description Junior Servant Leader (JSL) Coach, Seasonal Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA) Location: Philadelphia, PA (In-person) Employment Type: Seasonal, Non-Exempt Compensation: $35.00 per hour Reports To: Site Lead Application Deadline: 03/27/2026 About the Center for Black Educator Development (CBED) The Center for Black Educator Development exists to rebuild the national Black Teacher Pipeline in service of a clear vision: a world where all Black students have access to high-quality Black educators throughout their PreK–12 education, and where educator preparation, pedagogy, and policies that advance equity and effectiveness are fully institutionalized. Position Summary The Junior Servant Leader (JSL) Coach is a seasonal, in-person instructional leadership role within CBED’s Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA), a five-week summer apprenticeship program designed to prepare high school–aged aspiring educators while providing high-quality literacy instruction and enrichment to elementary school scholars. Reporting to the Site Lead, the JSL Coach owns the professional development of Junior Servant Leaders and the instructional integrity of classroom programming. Through individualized coaching, professional development facilitation, and instructional oversight, the JSL Coach ensures scholars receive high-quality literacy instruction and that JSLs build Black pedagogical understanding, instructional skill, and leadership capacity. This is an in-person seasonal position running from June 29 - July 31, with scheduled hours of 7:45am - 3:45pm EST. Mandatory training in preparation for the 5-week summer program. Though subject to change, the schedule is as follows: In-Person Training: June 15 - June 18 and June 22 - June 26. Core Accountabilities Instructional Coaching & JSL Development Lead the professional growth of Junior Servant Leaders through observation, feedback, coaching cycles, and data-informed support. Instructional Quality & Program Fidelity Ensure literacy instruction is implemented with fidelity to curriculum, instructional standards, and FSLA expectations. Professional Development Facilitation Facilitate high-quality professional learning experiences designed to strengthen instructional practice and leadership capacity. Data, Documentation & Continuous Improvement Maintain accurate coaching documentation and instructional data to track progress and inform improvement strategies. Equity-Centered Instructional Leadership Ensure coaching and instructional practices reflect CBED’s commitment to racial equity, justice, and Black pedagogical excellence. Key Responsibilities Manage and supervise a cohort of approximately six Junior Servant Leaders (JSLs) toward program outcomes. Ensure daily literacy lessons are internalized and implemented with fidelity to curriculum and instructional expectations. Conduct classroom observations of JSLs and provide targeted feedback aligned to goals and instructional competencies. Prepare for and lead regular one-on-one coaching sessions with JSLs grounded in data and reflective practice. Facilitate professional development sessions created by the Curriculum Department. Develop and support strategies to address instructional challenges and implement improvement plans. Complete required data, coaching forms, and other instructional deliverables accurately and on time. Supervise local field trips and ensurescholarsafety. Activelyparticipatein weekly one-on-one meetings with the Site Lead. Support JSLs in fostering the intellectual, emotional, and social development of scholars. Adhere to CBED and FSLA policies and procedures with fidelity. Performadditionalduties asrequiredto support program success. Leadership & Cultural Expectations CBED leaders are expected to model the organization’s core beliefs, leadership competencies, and values by centering justice, demonstrating operational discipline, and leading with clarity, accountability, and care. Leaders are responsible for fostering inclusive, high-performing teams; engaging in continuous learning and reflection; and building systems that are sustainable, transparent, and aligned with CBED’s mission. Leaders are also expected to demonstrate strong collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills, and to partner effectively across teams and stakeholders in ways that produce measurable outcomes and sustain the people doing the work. Qualifications Bachelor’s degreerequiredwith at least two (2) years of teaching experience resulting in strong student outcomes. At least two (2) years of experience coaching or mentoring teachers or youth preferred. Experience working in urban education settings. Experience with Google Workspace, Microsoft Teams, and data tracking systems. Demonstrated ability to provide clear, affirming, and constructive feedback and to receive feedback from others. Engages inongoing critical reflection on professional practice with attention to both outcomes and processes. Results-oriented, adaptable, and solution-focused approach to problem-solving. Upholdshigh standardsof professionalism, integrity, accountability, and respectful communication. Strong alignment with FSLA’s instructional model and CBED’s mission, vision, and core values.
